collaboration |kə-lab-ə-rā-shən|
noun
The action of working with someone to produce or create something.
Thought-provoking, amusing, alchemical, energetic collaboration!
That's the result of partnerships between 16 visual artists and 16 poets for this year's Word/Image show, in the Peggy Lewis Gallery.
These partnerships kicked off in April when Allied Arts invited 32 artists and poets to local artist Brian Holtzinger's studio. Names were drawn and, over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, the initial conversations ignited. In the three months since, after more conversations and visits to each other's workspaces, paint, ink, clay, mixed media, and words have taken shape.
The task seems simple on its face: Each artist presented the poet with an existing work for the poet to write about. Each poet presented the artist with an existing poem for which the artist created a visual representation. The show will feature a total of four works from each collaborating pair (two existing pieces and two new). Working through the process has led to both delightful inspirations and some challenges. No matter the route to finished work for this show, all the artists and writers have stretched themselves and each other.
The show will feature work by these pairs of visual artists and poets:
Anne Bowker & Rose Romfo
Elizabeth Freitag & Cindy Lamb
Gloria Gonzales Garcia & Sean Fitzgerald
Bob Jones & Mary Brunelle
Fay Jones & Randie Gottlieb
Laurie Kanyer & George Such
Eunsil Kim & Wendy Warren
Cheryl La Flamme & Linda Brown
Lindsey Merrell & Katharine Whitcomb
Jon Merrell & LeAnne Ries
Richard Nicksic & Lee Rasmussen
Penn O. Shelton & Joyce Hernandez
Karen Quint & Sara Gettys
Delma Tayer & Terry Martin
Sarah Thompson & Lenore Plassman
Lucy Valderhaug & Mark Fuzie
The show closes August 29. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and admittance is always free.
