ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

VISUAL ART

Chinese Calligraphy Ages 12+ • With: Lili Gaudet • FEE: $75
Class minimum: 4 • Saturdays from 1:30-3:30pm • August 2, 9, 16, 23
••• Learn basic brush strokes and learn to write beautiful Chinese proverbs and poetry. Basic strokes are the foundation for character writing, the order of these within the character will be emphasized. By the end of the course, the students should be able to recognize and write some Chinese characters, proverbs and poetry. PLEASE BRING: Chinese brushes (or watercolor brushes), Ink stick or Chinese calligraphy ink, grinding stone or ink vessel, newspaper for practice, rice paper or watercolor paper. Most art supply stores carry a beginning Chinese Calligraphy set that would work well for this class.

Beading with Carmen Students in 3rd through 6th grade • With: Carmen Petersen • FEE: $18 each session • Choose 1 or all sessions • Class minimum: 6
Tuesdays from 10am-noon • July 8, 15, 22, 29, August 5, 12
••• This class will focus on pattern, color, symmetry and the use of fine motor skills!  Students will learn how to read an easy pattern, how to make a pattern how to manipulate wire, use jewelry tools, make large and small beaded critters (including insects) create jewelry (including  bracelets and necklaces for boys and girls), and how to identify beads. PLEASE BRING: A healthy snack. Students may bring own supplies if they wish. NOTE: Must be able to read at a 3rd grade level or higher. Choose one or all sessions.

Manga Mondays Students in 3rd through 6th grade • With: Carmen Petersen • FEE: $15 each session • Choose 1 or all sessions • Class minimum: 6

••• Learn to draw Manga: a Japanese style of illustrating cartoons and comics! Make a new drawing every week. Students will learn how to use line, color, and tone to create Manga characters. Each session is separate and different so sign up for one or for all! Students who sign up and attend all will receive a certificate. July 7: Manga Boys. July 14: Manga Girls. July 21: Manga Mechas (mechanical monsters). July 28: Chibi Females. August 4: Chibi Males. August 11: Good Monsters. PLEASE BRING: A healthy snack. NOTE: Choose one or all sessions.

Basic Ceramics 2 for Kids Ages 10-17 • With: Eunsil Kim • FEE: $100

•••This class is for children who have had a basic ceramics class, and wish to do more clay work. Students will gain more hands-on experience with building techniques, and get a chance to practice wheel throwing. Also, students will learn more decoration methods and glazing. The student will refine their personal style. NOTE: Prerequisite of basic ceramics experience. Choose one or all sessions.

Beginning Drawing for Kids Ages 8-12 • With: Alyssa Skiles • FEE: $150

••• Basic introduction to drawing skills using the elements and principles. Fun, short projects that teach the art of drawing. Even those who can't draw are encouraged to come learn!

Beginning Drawing Students in Middle & High School • With: Eunsil Kim

••• This class is for children who want to learn basic art drawing such as gesture, blind contour, and photorealistic drawing. No previous art experience is necessary. PLEASE BRING: Color pencils, eraser, old magazines, glue, and scissors.

Watercolor Wonder 2nd-5th grades • With: Monique McFadden • FEE: $35
Class minimum: 5
Thursday and Friday from 10am-noon • June 19 & 20
••• We will be exploring warm and cool colors, value, and positive and negative space. We will look at the effects of salt and masking fluid on watercolor. We will also experiment with color mixing, wet-into-wet watercolor technique, and oil pastel watercolor resist. Students will be able to produce 3-4 paintings to take home with them.

Papier-mâché All ages • With: Eunsil Kim • FEE: $30

••• In this class we will make papier-mâché masks. We will use balloons for a basic form and acrylic paint for decoration. Papier-mâché will be made out of organic flour and salt. All materials are safe for all ages.

Woodcut Printmaking Middle & High School • With: Eunsil Kim • FEE: $45

••• In this class we will learn woodcut printing. Each student will create a design on a block of wood and carve it out. We will use water-based ink and sharp wood carving tools. This class is not intended for young children.
 

MUSIC

Beginning Guitar for Students Ages 9-18 • With: Cathy Kloster • FEE: $90  Class minimum: 4 • Monday through Thursdays from 11am-noon • June 23, 24, 25, 26, 30, July 1, 2, 3
••• For students who have an interest/desire to successfully learn how to play the guitar. Students will learn the basics of playing melody and learn how to play Major/Minor/Seventh chords. Strumming and picking techniques will be taught while learning how to read music. Singing while playing is encouraged and will be regularly modeled by the instructor, as it trains your ear and teaches how to accompany yourself. We will cover Hal Leonard Book One of a Guitar Method series. Daily practice is essential, as we will cover a lot in a two-week period. PLEASE BRING: Younger students need a junior-sized acoustic guitar. Teenagers can play an adult-sized acoustic guitar. Students will also need to purchase a Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, second edition $5.95 available at Ted Brown Music.

THEATRE

Beginning Public Speaking 101 Ages 16+ • With: Kathy Starr • FEE: $70  Class minimum: 6

Shakespeare Camp for Kids 4th-12th grades • With: Terry Cooper • FEE: $120
Monday-Friday from 9am-Noon • July 14-18, 21-25
Students will learn to decipher Elizabethan language, appreciate the complexity of Shakespeare's characters and themes…and get a taste of some of this planet's greatest literature, one bite at a time.  Students will also get lots of stage time, as this is a performance based class. Our own Shakespeare in the Park festival will take place Thursday evening, August 23rd, and class on Friday morning will be a mini Academy Awards for outstanding performances!

TEEN & ADULT

Mask-Making Extravaganza Teen & Adult • With: Denali Granholm
FEE: $70 • Class minimum: 5 • Thursdays from 1-4pm •  August 7 & 14
••• Create an extraordinary mask allowing your wildest imagination to play itself free of any pre-conceived ideas. In this class we'll use plaster bandages then add clay, bake, paint and decorate with the embellishments of one's most bizarre preferences. Anything goes in this class, just give yourself permission to truly play. An excellent class to take with a friend, family member, or loved one, so be sure to sign up in pairs! PLEASE BRING: Hair dryer and your special decorations for adorning. The rest will be provided.
Denali graduated from CWU in 1977 and became a professional bronze sculpture artist in 1984. Denali has given mask workshops since 1989 as a way of combining art and self-exploration. In 1989 she received a life-time contract with Nike, Inc. to sculpt the “Walk of Fame” for their world headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

••• "Floral" themed watercolor class designed for beginners and intermediates although anyone, even advanced students, may attend. Learn the basics and more of fundamental drawing skills and watercolor techniques. A relaxing and fun way to learn about watercolors and art in general! PLEASE BRING: Supply list is located online at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff.  Students can call the 800 number: 1-800 227-2788 and ask for Carmen Petersen's list (and mention Yakima). They will need to order about 10 days ahead.

VISUAL ARTS

Basic Ceramics 1 for Adults With: Eunsil Kim • FEE: $115 • Class minimum: 6

••• This class is for adults who wish to gain experience with clay. No previous art experience is necessary. Students will gain hands-on experience with building techniques such as pinch pot, coiling and slabs. Also, we'll practice decoration methods and glazing. Each student will learn some basic skills and explore their own ideas. NOTE: Choose one or all sessions.

Color Mixing in Oils With: Claire Edna Hurrey • FEE: $160 • Class minimum: 4

••• Confused about color? This is the class for you, whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist who wants a refresher course on the practical foundation of values, color harmony, color neutralization and complementary color. This class will teach you the skills needed to make color decisions in your work using the properties of how color operates. You will use hands-on mixing to create colors while learning the basics of color. Then you will use the skills learned to paint spatial illusion with a still life prop. PLEASE BRING: Separate supply list available in Allied Arts Office. NOTE: STUDENTS MUST REGISTER BY JUNE 19

••• It's never too late to explore the world of drawing. Come learn the basics in a fun, relaxed environment.

Intermediate Drawing with Brian With: Brian Holtzinger • FEE: $110 • Class minimum: 5

•••Join Brian Holtzinger, local artist, for a drawing workshop! Brian, who has exhibited his “dark & mysterious” large-format oil paintings locally at Allied Arts Gallery, Oak Hollow Gallery and Simon Edwards Gallery, would like to share his insight on drawing basics and help you experiment with materials that may be new to you: charcoal, graphite or oil pastels. PLEASE BRING: some newsprint and a sketch pad.
Brian attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University) in England, and received his master’s at the University of Oklahoma (where he also taught art classes). This past spring, his studio was featured on Larson Gallery’s Tour of Artists’ Homes & Studios, & his space described by Yakima Herald Republic reporter Kim Nowacki as “Indiana Jones sharing an office with Sam Spade (and Roy Rogers keeps stopping by to hang out).”


Collage with Delma With: Delma Tayer • FEE: $65 • Class minimum: 6
June 28 from 10am-4pm
•••This is not your average collage class! Emphasis will be placed on Oriental collage, focusing on materials used. PLEASE BRING: gouache paint (white & primary colors), YES brand glue, a large hogbristle brush (size 8-12), a roll of wax paper, and a few sheets of plain organic rice paper (available @ the Bindery). If you are using magazine cutouts, bring matte polymer.
Delma received her masters at Central Washington University and has been painting and exhibiting locally since the 60’s. She taught at YVCC for 20 years and recently had a retrospective held at the Larson Gallery entitled “40 Years of Art”.

(Not Your Mother’s) Doll-Making With: Wendy Warren • FEE: $50 • Class minimum: 6
Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm • July 16 & 23
•••Secret-keeper, worry-taker, talisman (or woman!), healer, imagination-piquer, conversation starter, personal pal.  Dolls have a long history in human culture. They are fun to make, decorate and imbue with attitudes and aptitudes we might wish for ourselves.  This two-part class walks you through easy techniques for making palm-sized dolls with character and panache! Skills required: basic sewing (as in “thread a needle, use it”), ability to abandon self-criticism, a sense of humor, and a willingness to play. Basic supplies will be provided.

Kick Start Writing With: Wendy Warren • FEE: $60 • Class minimum: 6
Wednesdays from 6-8:30pm • June 11, 18, 25, & July 2
This workshop offers a safe and fun environment to explore writing, energize your writing practice, and acquire concrete tools to continue to grow as a writer. Set aside your writing jitters and unleash your inner writer! Great for people who have been away from the page and need a few nudges to get back into the writing habit, people who want to write and don’t know where to start, and people who would like to dip into a community of writers with a free-spirited, funny instructor.

Lifestories, An Introductory Writing Workshop With: Wendy Warren  FEE: $60 • Class minimum: 6 • Wednesdays from 1:30-4:30pm • August 6, 13, 20, & 27
••• Our lives and the lives of our family (present and ancestral) are rich with stories. But often we don’t know where to begin collecting these stories or how to convey them. This workshop offers effective ways to retrieve, explore and write about your own life’s stories as well as other people’s stories. You will come away with several tools and tips for capturing your stories, exploring forms the stories can take, and ideas on how to share them, if you choose. Through in-class exercises, sharing, and thoughtful commentary, you’ll gain confidence in your writing. No previous experience required!
